Join us for Youth 250 NC: Your Voice. Your Future. Your NC.

Location: Downtown Raleigh, NC
 
The North Carolina Department of Natural and Cultural Resources and NC Child invite high school–age youth to downtown Raleigh for an inspiring day of civic engagement, leadership, and hands-on learning as part of the state’s America 250 NC commemoration. Youth 250 NC participants will explore the ideals of our democracy, engage with history, and discuss what it means to be an American today. The program empowers young people to participate actively in civic life during the America 250th anniversary and to lead their generation forward.
 
 Participants will:
  • Connect with peers and leaders from across the state through interactive sessions and activities
  • Explore some of Raleigh’s sites at the heart of state government (including the State Capitol, the State Archives, and NC Freedom Park)
  • Gain leadership tools to take action and shape the future of their communities
  • Meet new friends and have fun!
 Highlights include:
  • Dynamic speakers and youth voices
  • Engaging workshops on civic leadership and advocacy
  • Hands-on activities with the State Archives, a debate on the floor of the State Capitol, and a workshop on civic engagement
  • Music, art, food, and a closing celebration

Making Connections with Your Civic Crew
 
Kick off Youth 250 NC by meeting the crew you’ll journey with throughout the day! In this interactive opening session, you’ll break the ice, meet new friends, build connections, and set the tone for an inspiring experience. Together, we’ll explore what it means to be civically engaged, raise your voice, lead with purpose, and take action for your community—starting right here in the heart of North Carolina’s Capitol.

Remixing the Past: Blackout Poetry with the State Archives of NC
 
Ever thought history could be creative? Dive into historical petitions to see how people used their voice throughout history to influence the state legislature - and turn them into your own blackout poetry masterpiece. You'll get to mix hundreds-of-year old records with your own style and take home your creative product.

Speak Up. Step Up: Shaping the Next 250 Years
 
Youth 250 NC isn't just about looking back; it's about shaping the future. In this hands-on session, you’ll gain skills to help you speak up, lead change, and make your mark on the future. Participants will reflect on what it means to be an engaged citizen and set goals for themselves, their communities, and the country they will inherit. 

Big Questions, Bold Voices: Debate at the State Capitol
 
Step into the historic and active State Capitol and bring your voice to the center! You’ll debate big questions about what the 250th anniversary means for your generation and what it means to be a Founder today. Learn how to lead conversations, tackle tough topics, and keep it real while respecting different views.
