SWCA Environmental Consultants, in partnership with the North Carolina Department of Natural and Cultural Resources' (NCDNCR) America 250 NC, is developing a preservation plan for the Race to the Dan. This pivotal Revolutionary War campaign occurred in early 1781. This campaign featured Major General Nathanael Greene’s strategic retreat across the North Carolina Piedmont, which overextended British forces under Lieutenant General Charles Cornwallis. Despite winning several battles, the loss of men and supplies was too great, leading Cornwallis to give up on North Carolina and head into Virginia. Cornwallis’s army ultimately surrendered at Yorktown later that year.

This project is part of the larger America 250 NC commemoration and is funded by grants from the National Park Service and the American Battlefield Trust. The NCDNCR's goal of America 250 NC is to develop “robust, statewide programs across all 100 counties, uncovering new histories from stories we thought we knew.” These public meetings aim to gather public input, build interest, and explore educational opportunities related to this historic campaign. Your stories and insights can help shape how we preserve and commemorate these events for future generations.

This project was made possible through the collaboration of SWCA, NPS, The American Battlefield Trust, and NCDNCR-America 250 NC.
